[net.music] THE R&R dance tape: summary

pmr@drutx.UUCP (10/12/84)

<Does this bug still exist?>

Needless to say, one or two people responded to my plea with very
danceable tunes. I'd like to thank all of you for your time and
suggestions. They're all great.

A few others asked that I submit what I get to the net, so here goes.

Phil (dancin' his #** off) Rastocny :-)

Well Phil, I've been reading you system stories for awhile. I've
been entertained at the least. Well as good a system as you have
I can make party tapes.
Background:
I throw two parties every year a spring party and of course
HalloWayneZ... (halloween). It's been going on for 4 years now.
The reason for such sucess is the MUSIC! I screwed up one
year by playing alot of top 40 that was too slow a beat and the party
crashed vry early. Most parties end up about 7AM te next day.

The Key:
You need good dance music. Period. Old, new doesn't matter.
Second choice Fast Beat music ( no slow junk, it brings people down)

Suggestions:
	Cyndi Lauper
	Culture Club
	Duran Duran
	Tubes
	J Geils Band
	Fixx
	Scandal
	BILLY IDOL  ++
	Flock of Seagulls
	ROMANTICS  ++
	SQUEEZE  ++
	Hall & Oates (limited selection)
	Eurythmics
	Go go's ??? maybe
	Cars
	Wang Chung

Heres an idea you might try. When in the car if you hear a good beat
remember the song that how I get some real good material

Yours in Fidelity,
WayneZ...

"Flying Saucer Rock and Roll" Robert Gordon.

>From: ihnp4!cbosgd!cbscc.UUCP!rsg

There are some great obscure r&r songs, but for the people to really
get into it, they need to know the music, therefore:
Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger
  	Flashdance by Irene Cara
  	Gloria by Laura Branigan
Not 80s but still great:
Lots of stuff by the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones
Let me get my list and get back to you...

An 80's dance tape should have lots of Prince on it. Some song
suggestions are:
Dirty Mind, Party-Up, and perhaps When You Were Mine from the Dirty
     Mind LP (1980?)
DMSR (Dance, Music, Sex, Romance), Delirious from 1999
Lets Go Crazy from Purple Rain

For a modernized (somewhat) 50's interlude, perhaps some Stray Cats
(Rock This Town, etc.)

Some Talking Heads (Life During Wartime is indispensible - "this ain't
no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no fooling around!") Also,
their latest album (studio), with Swamp, Burning Down the House.

For some basic danceable rock and roll, try some Dave Edmunds. Good
party cuts mi8ght be:
Trouble Boys, Heart of the City - Trax on Wax (also see Nick Lowe's
better version of Heart of the City)
Sweet Little Lisa, Queen of Hearts from repeat When Necessary
I Knew the Bride (when she used to rock and roll) and What Did
I Do Last Night? from Get It!
Come to think of it, a lot of Dave Edmunds!

Some reggae and/or ska - Bob Marley perhaps?

English Beat (try their double-speed version of Tears of a Clown)
and, a little slower, Hole In My Heart (I think)

Put in a hard-core punk set, with some early Clash, such as
Total Control, I Fought The Law; I think it was the Sex Pistos
who did a punk version of I'm Leaving On A Jet Plane; Maybe add
some Ramones (Sheena Is A Punk Rocker, I Wanna Be Sedated) Then,
mellow out of the punk mood slowly be putting on some David
Johansen, such as Funky But Chic, Girls, Girls, Girls, eytc.)

Some older Police, with a reaggae feel, such as Walking On the Moon,
Message In a Bottle, Don't Stand So Close to Me, etc.

Well, I'm tired of typing, but I hope this has provided some ideas, even
though some might be considered a little extreme.

The most exciting dance music I've ever heard is
Stravinsky's "Sacre du Printemps."
I don't suppose that's quite what you had in mind, though :-)

There are a bunch of VERY danceable numbers on the
Stones' "Exile on Main Street" (double) album.
Audio trivia question: which song on this album was cut in mono?

>From: ihnp4!arizona!rogerh

Bow Wow Wow, "See Jungle See Jungle ..."
Prince, "1999"
Tom Tom Club, ???

>From: ihnp4!seismo!umcp-cs!eneevax!ong

Well, I don't really have any suggestions that I can think of at this
time, but I'm also looking for some suggestions myself. If you don'
mind and it isn't too much trouble for you, could you please mail me the
suggestions that you receive? I would really appreciate that.

P. S. Bruce Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark seems to be a very logical
choice.

>From: ihnp4!uw-beaver!tektronix!hplabs!intelca!kds

Has to have "Rocking the Casbah" by the Clash and
"Walking in LA" by Missing Persons. And how about
"Time Warp" from Rocky Horror (kinda dated, but the same idea).

I find the B-52s good to dance to, almost any of their albums except
Mesopotamia.

>From: ihnp4!ihuxl!brooks

A must is Nobody but Me by George Thoroughgood or other assorted
artists. It's the one sure tune to always get people dancing.
Springsteen is good for that too.

The English Beat: Mirror in the Bathroom
			   Ranking Full Stop
			   Spar Wid Me
			   Ackee 1 2 3
	XTC: Melt the Guns
			   Senses Working Overtime
	Elvis Costello: Pump It Up
			   Beyond Belief
	Prince: Let's Go Crazy
			   Let's Pretend We're Married
Dance, Music, Sex, Romance (I'm not sure if
						       that's the title)
These, for me, are songs that could not be excluded on a good dance tape
(although it's more new wave than rock and roll--hope that doesn't matter)

Hi. I saw your request for dance tunes, and I'd like to make some
suggestions but want to first do some hard thinking on it...

The reason I'm writing now, though, is to ask you to keep copies of
the suggestions you receive and maybe submit a summary to the net.
Or, of course, you could fire them back to me directly. I'd really
appreciate seeing what other folks have in mind!

	Thanks very much!

Here are a few entries for your R&R Dance tape:

	J. Geils Band	Flamethrower
	Don Henley	Dirty Laundry
	Re-flex The Politics of Dancing
Heaven 17	Crushed by the Wheels of Industry
	ZZ Top Sharp Dressed Man
	Dave Edmunds	Slipping Away
	Dwight Twilley	Girls

The list goes on... These may be more techno-pop than anything
else, but it's been my experience that tunes like these, (with
enough beer for a catalyst) will get even the most hard-line
Led Zepper pretty riled up.

Well, let's see ...

"Super Freak" -- Rick James
"Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure)" -- Spandau Ballet
"Generals and Majors" or "Living Through Another Cuba" -- XTC
"The One Thing" -- INXS
"The Glamorous Life" -- Sheila E. (My current favorite.)
"1999" -- Prince
"Talk Talk" or "It's My Life" -- Talk Talk
"Never Say Never" -- Romeo Void
"Give" -- Missing Persons
"Dead Giveaway" -- Shalimar
"In the Name of Love" -- Thompson Twins

Gotta check the record rack for other "movers and groovers".

Hi again. Could probably go on and on for a long time, but here's just
one page. I'm anxious to see what everyone else likes.

"Rotating Head" or "Sugar and Stress" -- The English Beat
"Let's Go Crazy" -- Prince (has a 12" dance single, the 45 isn't worth it)
"Two Tribes" -- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (Ever hear of these guys??!)
"Pilot Error" -- Stephanie Mills (I think)
"Ain't Nobody" -- Chaka Khan
"Goody Two Shoes" -- Adam Ant
"Voice of America" or "Justice" -- Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul

A NON-request:
songs from *Thriller*, I'm getting REALLY tired of this album.
But then again, your intended audience might love it.

"She's out of sync, she's a half track behind."

If it's not already too late -- try these

Talking Heads	'Speaking in Tongues'
'Burning Down the House' is probably the best dance cut
off this album, but it's all very good. You might want
the extended remix version on EP...

Human League	'Dare'
'Seconds' is great. All very danceable syntho-pop.

Here's a few that seem to be good for me not in any particular order:

"Up on the Cat Walk" Simple Minds
    "Controversy", "1999" Prince
    "Tainted Love" Soft Cell
    "Rock Lobster" B-52's
    "Computer World" Kraftwerk
lots of stuff by Micheal Jackson
"Hungry Like the Wolf" Duran Duran

Post what you end up with, I never know the names of a lot of the good songs.

Dave

Someone said B-52's! I'd like to add:

"Party Out of Bounds/Private Idaho" to this list.

There are other good dance tunes I can think of:

	Don't Go -- Yaz
	I'm Ready -- Kano
Born to be Alive -- Patrick Hernandez

When I hear these songs (and others) I'm sure to turn them up all the way!
--
Hug me till you drug me, honey!

>I suggest that the juxteposition of "current (80s type) rock and roll
>dannce (your #** off)" music with the phrase "great songs" creates an
>oxymoron.

Despite what Mr. Yampell (of "I get my teeth kicked in because I'm
sensitive" fame) says, there is plenty of great danceable music from
the 80's.

Bill Nelson - Every Day Feels Like Another New Drug (Vistamix)
Prince - 1999, D.M.S.R, Computer Blue, Controversy
(D.M.S.R is the really funky song played at the "party"
		in Risky Business)
Devo - Whip It, Girl U Want, ...
B-52's - Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Give Me Back My Man, Party Out of
		Bounds, Planet Claire, 52 Girls
Ramones - Sheena is a Punk Rocker, Rockaway Beach, ...
Vapors - Turning Japanese
Tom Tom Club - Wordy Rappinghood, Genius of Love
Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove (also George Clinton/P-Funk of
		any kind)
David Bowie - Scary Monsters
Depeche Mode - New Life, Photograph
Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia, Viva Las Vegas
Our Daughter's Wedding - Lawnchairs
Michael Jackson - Rock With You, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough
			(avoid Thriller, as it's overused)

That should provide enough for one tape or so.

I'd never leave out 'Annalisa' by PIL (Public Image Ltd.) as
an ultimate dance tune. I'm not sure the exact album title, but it
says 'Religion Attack' on the cover somewhere.

       Modern Dance - Pere Ubu
       Isolation - Joy Division
Girlfriend is Better Than That - Talking Heads
Lust For Life - Iggy Pop
Tears of a Clown - the Beat
