[misc.wanted] MS-DOS software for UNIXoids

rdm@cfcl.UUCP (Rich Morin) (10/08/88)

I'm looking for leads on software that provides UNIX-like capabilities, but
runs on MS-DOS (PC-DOS) systems. The software could be freeware, shareware,
or commercial, as long as it's legal :-}. I also don't care whether it is
a port of a UNIX package, or an emulation thereof.

While I will post the results to comp.sys.ibm.pc, my real objective here is
to find stuff I can talk about in an Off the Shelf (UNIX REVIEW) column. I
don't want to bog down the net with responses, so please use email, etc.

The major commerical package is the MKS toolkit. It's a reasonably
complete set of Unix utilities, for around $130. It includes ksh,
awk, vi, tar, etc. Most people (including me) seem to like it. There
are lots of random utilities floating around on the net. The most
complete seems to be picnix. It is shareware, but is considerably
less expensive than MKS. It has a few dozen utilities, and doesn't
have major things like shell, awk, or vi that MKS does. It has also
had minor bugs now and then, depending upon the version. But it does
provide Unix replacements for most of the MS/DOS commands, and for
many purposes is sufficient. MKS is from Mortice Kern in Waterloo,
Ont. Picnix has been posted to the net several times, so look for
archives for the PC binary groups. I don't have it online anymore
since I got MKS, so I don't have any more information.
