[misc.wanted] summary of the summary of 800 numbers!

ptully@oucsace.cs.OHIOU.EDU (Dead Puppies) (02/19/91)

Once again, I got numerous emails pleading me to give them this info,
or for me to post a summary, so...this is much easier, the info below has not
been verified, nor did I try any of the phone numbers, you'll have to do that
for yourselves...whatever.

p.s. this info was about P.C. Pursuit mostly.

This was actually a service provided by GTE Telenet. You could make unlimited
calls thru their packet switches between (like) 8:00PM and 6:00AM for a flat
monthly rate. I think they dropped the offer when people really started to
use it alot, but you can call them and confirm. -- Darren

As far as I know, and I have no >personal< experience with it, only
second-hand, I believe PC Pursuit is run by US Sprint. I suggest you
call them (800-877-4646) and see if it's their baby.

I know of some problems with it (these are all hearsay and possibly
malremembered to boot): only <= 2400 bps; not all areas have a local
number to reach it; not all areas have a local dialout port (as I
understand, PCP is mostly used for cheap calling of BBSs around the
country); and I also hear there's a lot of codes to enter. If you find
out actual, factual information about it, I'd be interested in hearing
about it.

Good luck...

Why waste space with an actual .sig? My message text does that well enough.

PC Pursuit is a service from SprintNet, formerly known as Telenet. Outside
of normal business hours, you can dial in to any Telenet dial-in in the
country and back out in any of many large cities. It costs $30/month for up
to 30 hours permonth. Call 1-800-TELENET for more details. I used to use it
until I decided that there was more to life than dialing in to BBSes in Los
Angeles.

PC Pursuit is a service offered by Telenet. Telenet is a company owned
by Sprint. Several years ago the PC Pursuit service gave you unlimited
off-peak usage at a fixed rate, but no more. Now you buy blocks of
30-hours at a time. Call 800 information and ask for Telenet's number...
they will give you the details.
