with You, marked with ashes and the stark reminder,
'You are dust, and unto dust you shall return.'
Ashes come from flames, I know -- last year's palms
burned down til naught remains but frail dust
to mark my forehead for a time, residue
of former things but now the stark reminder,
'You are dust, and unto dust you shall return.'
But will that lesson make its way from my forhead
to my heart? Will I feel the burning there as well?
That will happen only as I take each step
these forty days with You, my Lord,
attentive to Your Word and open
to the promptings of Your Holy Spirit who
once came upon Your faithful people
in the sign of flames.
Ere I turn to dust, O Lord, turn my heart to You.
Let the Word of your forgiveness glow within me,
that I may know the warmth and healing
of Your Light, and follow where You lead. "
