[net.sf-lovers] Doctor Who

Could anyone tell me if TARDIS is an abbreviation, and, if so, what it
stands for? (Having started watching Doctor Who somehere in the middle
of the Baker episodes I've obviously missed lots of background material.)

I just got back from a week's vacation that included
attending the Doctor Who convention Panopticon West. I got to see
serials with each of the five Doctors, including the first - An
Unearthly Child, the Pertwee/Baker regeneration - Planet of the Spiders,
and the Baker/Davison regeneration in Logopolis and Castrovalva.

My favorites for the weekend - Earthshock, Mawdryn Undead and Enlightenment.
I would even go so far as to choose Mawdryn Undead as the very best
Doctor Who serial I have seen. I guess this makes me a
totally converted Davison fan, I understand I missed some discussion
of this on the net while I was away.

The con guests included producer John Nathan-Turner. He told us that
the Doctor will get an American companion next season.

The 20th anniversary special set for Nov. 23 on the BBC will be shown
the same night in this country, pester your local PBS stations
to carry it (especially if you're in my area, Baltimore-Washington).

I was able to get to the Whovian Tour in Philadelphia,
where they showed 'An Unearthly Child', 'Death to the Daleks',
and 'The King's Demons', all of which I enjoyed. Plus, they
showed the pilot for 'K-9 and Company', which is unfortunately
not going to be made into a series. The premise is that the
Doctor leaves K-9 Mark 3 in the attic of Sarah Jane Smith's
house in Croyden, and she and K-9 and a cousin(?) of hers,
who happens to be a computer whiz, go off on all sorts of
adventures. If you're used to 'screaming Sarah', you'll find
she's changed for the better.

Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor) and Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith)
were the guest stars, and both of them are really marvelous
speakers and very interesting people.

There were lots of things sold, all very expensive (T-shirts for
$10.00, scarves for $60.00 and up), but the admission price of
$10.00 was well worth it. If this tour comes to your area,
GO!!

In response to the questions about the Doctor, he is has received
a Doctrate in all sciences from the accademy of Gallifrey. After
graduating, he changed his name to Doctor from his old name which is
a mathmetical formula that translates to Pheta Sigma(from the episode
the Armaggedon Factor). The Doctor does not like to use his skills
to practice medicine and relies on other people to do that.

Out with the old in with the new. Peter Davison is being replaced
by Colin Baker (article in latest Starlog issuse). Baker has been
seen in a Doctor Who episode, "The Arc of Infinity", he was one of the
guards in the citedel.

The Doctor in the movie Doctor Who and the Daleks was played by Peter Cushing.
There is no mention of Gallifrey or Time Lords because the Doctor is mot a Time
Lord. He was a Earthling scientist; the Doctor Who movies were very bad.

Lionheart is planning a new distribution packet and will show Hartnell and
Troughton.

According to the London Times, Doctor Who will be cancelled for only nine
Months which is bad enough.

Subject: Alan Dean Foster Spellsinger series

The latest Spellsinger (Moment of the Magician) by Foster is enjoyable but not
equal to the first three.

Subject: Phillip Jose Farmer request.

Has anybody heard about anything new from Farmer!
