From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Sunday, 4 Febrary, 1940 Tremendous Soviet air raids continue in Finland; in the last two days, over 140 targets have been attacked. Fierce fighting continues before the Mannerheim Line, with no significant Soviet gains. Japan refuses to cease bombing attacks on the French-owned Yunnan Railway, accenting the refusal with yet another raid. Japanese authorities state that attacks will continue as long as the French allow military supplies to China to use the railroad. The Balkan Entente concludes its conference, stating its determination to maintain peace in the region. Reforms are initiated in German schools; "antiquated" subjects are replaced by new courses in racial and inheritance laws, and increased emphasis is placed on laboratories and other practical work. English remains a required subject. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@cbnews.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "Why isn't it logical for Germany to dominate a continent in whose very heart it is placed, rather than England, which is not a part of it at all and which already dominates the seas and a goodly portion of the earth's remaining territory ?" - E.H.
