"The democratic norm cannot be the norm of the cyclone cellar of the funk
hole. It must be a place where a man can stand erect acn call his soul
his own. But no democrat in the whole world can call his soul his own if
the most powerful of them, the wealthiest of them, grudges a grant of
sixty million dollars to the bravest people on earth." - Francis Hackett,
in a letter to the NY Times.
