Claude Lanzmann's SHOAH will be shown on WNED Channel 17 (Buffalo - Public Broadcasting Service) this week. It's on both Monday-Thursday at 8pm and Tuesday-Friday at 1pm, in 4 parts. The total length of the film is 9-1/2 hours. I haven't (yet) seen SHOAH, but have read a number of reviews. It's a documentary that explores the Holocaust ("Shoah" is the Hebrew word for the Holocaust), what happened, and why. Rather than using WWII-era footage, it's done entirely with present-day footage of the concentration camps and extermination camps, and interviews with survivors and former camp guards and SS officers (some of whom were filmed without their knowledge). The reviews I have read suggest SHOAH is very moving and well worth seeing. This is the first time it has been on TV. (The videotapes of the entire film can be purchased, but they cost about $600, and that's a subsidized price, so if you ever want to watch it, taping it this week would be worthwhile.) I've limited this posting to Distribution: ont because I don't know whether and when the entire PBS network is showing it.
