SUBJECT: First cricket test India vs Australia at Madras

The cricketing world was ablaze as for the second time in the history
of the game a test match ended in a tie. The last time was 26 years
ago in December of 1960 in Australia at Brisbane. The match was then
between Australia led by Richie Beneau and West Indies led by Frank
Worrel.
The details of the match were as follows. Australia batted
first and scored 574. At the end of the third day India was precari-
ously placed at 270 for 7 with Kapil Dev still at the wicket on 35.
India still need about 100 runs to avoid a follow on. Kapil scored
his fourth century in dashing form by hitting 24 fours in his knock
of 116 and India were allout for 397 in the early half of the 4th day.
Australia batted till the end of the day and were 170 for 5.
Fifth day Border declared as expected leaving India to score 348 to
win in 5 hours and 20 mandatory overs.
India took up the challenge in great style. The backbone of
the batting was Gavaskar who scored 90. Mohinder scored 52. At tea
India were 192 for 2 and seemed to be well on their way to victory.
Four overs to go India needed 17 runs with 4 wickets at hand. The
Australian spinner Rev Bright took 3 quick wickets setting the stage
for the last over. Three balls to go the scores were level with
Shastry on 40 at the runners end. Maninder Singh was at the batting
end. He fended off the first ball. He moved on to the back foot for
the next delivery and was out lbw bringing to an end a memorable
test.
Tomorrow is the next one day match, the third in the 6 match
series. The one day series is level at one each. Second test starts
on Friday at Delhi.
