Greetings! I have placed a Tamil font (called Palladam) that I constructed, on our machine in the public directory. You can get the relevant files by anonymous ftp from Machine: chmsr.gatech.edu (128.61.3.10) Directory: /pub/Tamil (Login as anonymous with any password.) Both bitmap and PostScript fonts are there. The bitmap doesn't look nice on the screen in small sizes, but both print fine (if I may say so myself). The mapping follows my intution and common phonetic equivalents (i.e., don't expect to see any standard with which you may be familiar). Currently the fonts are for the Apple Macintosh. I plan to convert them so that they are usable on the NeXT, Sun, and MS-DOS machines. (If you have experience converting fonts to any of these machines and/or operating systems, and are willing to help, please let me know.) The font is free, but is not in the public domain. You can find the details in the files Palladam.Copyright and Palladam.Readme. These two are text files. The fonts themselves are ascii files prepared using BinHex 4.0. If you copy the fonts and like them (and use them) please let me know. I would like to improve the fonts some more, but my workload doesn't leave me much spare time for such pursuits. (This has taken long enough!) I do plan to work some more and place a "new improved" version in the archives in the next several months. If you have any suggestions and/or would like to know of any more changes/improvements, please send me your e-mail address. If you don't have ftp access, I suggest that you get a copy from someone who has. If you really have no other way of getting a copy, I may be able to consider mailing you a copy. Please keep in mind that my graduate student days (with a lot of extra time) were over long ago and that time is a scarce resource :-). I hope you find the font useful. Peace, govind Macintosh is a trademark of Apple Computer. PostScript is a trademark of Adobe Systems. NeXT and Sun are trademarks of the respective companies. MS-DOS is a trademark of MicroSoft (I think.) T.
