The election commission has decided to hold assembly elections in Kerala simultaneously with the Lok sabha elections. With this assembly elections will now be held in five states and the union territory of Pondicherry. Besides Kerala, the other states are Tamilnadu, W.Bengal, UP and Haryana. In a significant development, four JD(S) leaders have joined Cong(I) yesterday. They are Mrs.Usha Singh union minister of state for tourism, the speaker of Haryana assembly Mr.Harminder Singh Chaddha, the secretary of Bihar JD(S) Mr.Prashant singh and a former Haryana minister. This was announced by the Cong(I) general sec Mr.Ghulam Nabi Azad in New Delhi today. Mrs.Usha singh has submitted resignation to the PM. In an another development, the former controller and the auditor general of India Mr.T.N.Chaturvedi has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Meanwhile, the BJP has urged the election commission not to hold elections in the northern state of Punjab. With the announcement of the election schedule due next week, various political parties are finalizing the list of their candidates for the LS and assembly elections. The exports form the Kandla free trade zone has attained an all time high turnover of over 4560 million rs during 90-91. This marks an increase of 45% over previous year's exports. Meanwhile, the Santa Cruz export processing zone has exported goods amounting to 3890 million rs during 90-91 against the target of 3360 million rupees.
