      The state CPI secretary, Mr Loknath Choudhury, seeking
re-election Jagatsinghpur Lok Sabha seat staved off the
challenge of Congress-i's Mr nityananda samantaray to win by a
margin of over 16,000 votes.

      Mr sivaji Patnaik of CPI-m retained the bhubaneswar seat
by defeating prof manmathnath Das (Cong-i), former vice
chancellor of utkal university, by a slender margin of 3,345
votes.
      Mr khagapati pradhani (Cong-i) equalled the record of
late r jagannath Rao when he won the nawarangpur (st)
constituency for the seventh consecutive time since 1967. The
pcc-ichief, Mr gomango has also won the election to the Lok
Sabha for the sixth consecutive term.
      Mr srikant jena (JD) later claimed that a +huge sympathy
wave+ in favour of Congress-I generated after the
assassination of Rajiv Gandhi had resulted in the party's

      Congress i wins 138 out of 252 declared
      new Delhi, June 17 () the Congress(I) bagged 138 out
of the 252 Lok Sabha results declared so far but its winning
streak was halted in Uttar Pradesh, bihar, west Bengal and
Andhra Pradesh, where the party suffered stunning reverses.
      The BJP, which has emerged as the second largest party
winning 64 seats, has made its presence felt in ten states and
two union territories.
      The party is also well placed in the assembly elections
in Uttar Pradesh and has won seven of the 10 results declared.
The JD won two and the Congress i only one.
      In bihar, the Congress i was in for a severe drubbing
failing as it did to win or lead in any seat for which
information was available so far. The Janata Dal-led national
front was forging ahead only in Biharwhere it won nine of the
ten results declared so far.
      The Janata Dal won 5, the CPI one, the jmm 3 and the BJP
got one. The Janata Dal was leading in 13 seats, jmm2, CPM
one, and the BJP in four seats.
      The CPM-led left front was in a comfortable position in
west Bengal leading in 87 out of the 102 seats for which

      the telugu desam and its national front partners were
sweeping the poll in Andhra Pradesh winning 11 out of 14 seats
for which results were available. Counting was taken up for
only 17 seats yesterday.
      The telugu desam won nine seasts, the CPI and CPM one
each, the BJP one and the Congress i two. The result for
Hyderabad where the mim leader Mr ss owaisi was contesting was
yet to come.
      The Congress i maintained its winning spree in
Maharashtra bagging 31 of the 37 results declared so far. The
BJP won three seats and Shiv Sena two while the CPM got one.
The Janata Dal has drawn a blank so far.
      The ruling BJP suffered stunning reverses in Madhya
Pradesh at the hands of Congress i which won 27 of the 40
seats. The BJP which had 27 seats could win only 12 seasts.
      The BJP won 12 seats in rajasthan, one less than in the
last elections and the Congress i won the rest 13. The Janata
Dal drew a blank in the state.

      out of the seven seats in Delhi, the BJP won four and
led in East Delhi where the Congress I leader Mr h k l is
contesting while the Congress I bagged one and was leading in
one.
      The deputy PrimeMinister Mr Devi Lal and president of
ruling SJP got a drubbing in in ghirai assembly seat in
Haryana and was trailing in rohtak Lok Sabha seat.
      Out of the 10 seats in the state the Congress i made
deep inroads to Mr Devi Lal's popularity leading in nine seat.
The Haryana vikas party of Mr Bansi Lal was leading in bhiwani
seat.

new UDF ministry to take office this week
      kochi, June 17 (): the new Congress(I)-led united
democratic front (UDF) ministry in Kerala will most probably
be sworn-in on June 21.
      This was indicated by senior Congress(I) leader, Mr k
Karunakaran, who spoke to newsmen before emplaning for Delhi
to attend the Congress-i's parliamentary board meeting there.
      Mr Karunakaran, in reply to questions, said he expected
the legislature party to elect its leader on June 21, soon
after his return from Delhi.
