[uw.cgl] Fast rotations in computer graphics

I've recently had a discussion with a mathematician studying finite fields.
He asked me if finite fields have been used in computer graphics for 
achieving fast rotations. The only thing that I've seen in the graphics
literature in this context is the use of quaternions. But how about more
general finite fields? If anyone has seen a reference in this direction,
please mail me.
