[talk.politics.theory] Non-Coercion Principle: Square 1

gf@dasys1.UUCP (G Fitch) (04/13/88)

I think I've missed something in the discussion of the NCP
and I hope you'll forgive my ignorance. Let me illustrate it
by supposing a situation in which there are ten people on a
desert island, where the only source of food is a hidden yam
patch. One of the people finds it, but because he doesn't
like the other people, refuses to divulge its location. As
the island is large and the yam patch small, it is probable
that the others will starve unless they can convince the
finder to change his mind.

Now, under the political philosophies which obtain in most
places, a number of the prospective starvees would go and
sit on the holdout's head until they found out what they needed
to know. This sort of thing would seem to violate the NCP.

I know this has been gone through before, but I missed it,
and I'd like to get caught up if possible.
