[net.music] Tom Lehrer?

clark@sdcsla.UUCP (Clark Quinn) (10/11/84)

<it doesn't even matter if you stick a few extra syllables into a verse>

Heard of Tom Lehrer? Of "That Was The Year That Was"? Who
has been lauded with a musical review all his own, "Tomfoolery",
which was a smash in London, and that I caught in San Francisco?
Who sometimes makes awful rhymes, but always has a poignant social
commentary? Who has songs covering such topical events as pollution
"Pollution", nuclear war "Who's next?", bigotry "National Brotherhood
Week", politics "Send the Marines", etc.? Who?

Never heard of him.

Professor Lehrer also did one of my favorite love songs, "Poisoning Pigeons
in the Park". Sigh.

For those interested in Tom 'Be Prepared' Lehrer, his collected
works have been put into a book called _Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer_.
All of the stuff from his three albums, the music that he wrote and
performed for the PBS children's show _The Electric Company_, and, of
couurse, the ever popular but never recorded _I Got It From Agnes_.

I will send the name of the publisher to those who ask.

By the way I should point out that "SONGS BY TOM LEHRER" which is
currently available and the old TOM LEHRER 10 inch "His songs, his
piano, and his So-called voice," while they contain the same titles,
are not the same records. The newer one was rerecorded and some of
the words were changed.

I hadn't heard that before. But isn't that about 10 years after his last
album was released?

Just wanted to let Tom's fans know: when I saw "Tomfoolery" in Boston
around Christmas 1982, they did "I Got It From Agnes". BTW "Tomfoolery"
is a must-see for any Tom Lehrer fan. True, it lacks the magic of "that
voice", but it's funny nevertheless.

Tom Lehrer has 3 records in print by Reprise Records. Look in the
humor section of most record stores. The most recent one (circa
1965) is "That Was The Year That Was" and is very enjoyable
political music from the TV show of the same name. The other two
are 50's stuff and somewhat raunchy.

Actually, not all of his songs are in the book. Most are.
