[talk.philosophy.misc] Endangered Species

boozer@atlas1.UUCP (09/17/86)

John McCarthy has missed the trees for the forest. Let's help him out.

> Prior to increase in human ability to destroy the environment, species
 >died out at an average rate of about 2 per century. Now it's in the
 >thousands and increasing. The arrogance inherent in your anthropocentric
 >chauvinism is exceeded only by the myopia exhibited by your belief that
 >human life in a world barren of ecological diversity would not be dreadfully
 >impoverished.

John has quoted a "fact" that is unverifiable and thus useless.

"Prior to ... human ability to destroy the environment, species died
out at ... about 2 per century." This could also be said,
"Prior to ... human ability (or interest) to study and record most
of the "ecological diversity", species died out at ... about ???"

Where are all these 800 year old fossils of these dead species?
This is just pure speculation. John knows he is blowing smoke. Did you?

Another color of smoke comes in the form of:
"... life in a world barren of ecological diversity would ... be
dreadfully impoverished." How many of the species that have died-out
to date does John find hard to live without? Are there just too few
species of butterfly? A few are slated for total annihilation.
Maby John will find life not worth living if the condor is no more.
Day to day life and enjoyment of this world has not been affected by
the passing of species into the either.

NOTE:: I am <<NOT>> saying that John is wrong to think man should
not destroy the environment and those who live in it.
John IS correct in trying to do what is right.

John just needs to keep from blowing smoke. He can come
up with GOOD LOGICAL arguments for his ideas. Let's keep
	him honest.
