[talk.philosophy.misc] supernatural and science

colonel@sunybcs.UUCP (Col. G. L. Sicherman) (10/08/86)

I agree with Kenn Barry - if you can accept lawlessness, you can accept
supernaturalism. Scientific investigation requires only that _some_ things
obey laws.

Science applies only to repeatable, generally observable phenomena. If
you get a headache, I can't observe it as you can. The peculiarity of
thinking like a scientist is that when the scientist gets a headache,
he can imagine himself outside himself, looking at himself having a
headache. The affront to philosophy comes when he forgets that it's
just imagination. ...

POZZO: He used to dance the farandole, the fling, the brawl, the jig,
the fandango and even the hornpipe. He capered. For joy. Now
that's the best he can do. Do you know what he calls it?
ESTRAGON: The Scapegoat's Agony.
VLADIMIR: The Hard Stool.
POZZO: The Net. He thinks he's entangled in a net.
