[talk.politics.misc] Reagan's drug-testing program

carey@uiucdcs.CS.UIUC.EDU (09/16/86)

Last night the INN news lead story was about Reagan's real reason
for his speech last night with near-sighted Nancy.
He is trying to push through an administrative order to force testing
of federal employees (about 1 million people, about 100,000, I think,
that his order would affect). How much do you imagine this will cost?
INN reporter Jeff Kamen said...
"there are thousands of kids in school who have serious drug problems.
But if one of those drug users were to decide to give up drugs tomorrow,
he would find that those rehabilitation centers that are still
operating [despite Reagan-backed budget cuts], would be seriously
overbooked--many have a backlog of months."
(apologies for any misquotes)

It seems to me the money to test federal paper-pushers and postal
workers would be better spent to provide rehabilitation to drug
users seeking help. I doubt if Reagan seriously wants to cut
spending, he just wants to spend where he wants to, and it seems
his priorities are not in the country's best interests.

This is a non-presidential election year--any congressman would be
taking a risk to oppose such a well-marketed plan. It might be a
good idea to let him (or her) know how you feel about this.
