[talk.politics.misc] S. African sanctions/Sen. Lugar

From the Denver Post, October 2:

		S. African to senators: We'll
		cut off U.S. grain
		******************************
Washington (AP) - The South African foreign minister warned two U.S.
farm state senators Wednesday his country would cut off
purchases of U.S. grain if the Senate overrides President Reagan's
veto of economic sanctions against South Africa.

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., called the action by Foreign Minister
	R. F. "Pik" Botha "despicable" and an unacceptable intrusion
into Senate business that amounts to "bribery and intimidation."

	[blah, blah blah]
		******************************

Hmmm. Sounds like the good Senator might be easily offended. Well,
what the hell did he expect? Many thanks and a plaque from the S.
African government? What are the sanctions themselves but
"intimidation"?

Disclaimer: I am not a supporter of the South African government, the
principles of apartheid, Senator Lugar, or Ronnie's stance in this matter.
Just a voter who is sick and tired of election year politics.
