Here (finally) are the answers and results of the common factor quiz: PARTICIPANTS: Bob Schleicher (ihuxk!rs55611) Stephen Folta (yale!folta) Bill Nemec (houti!wn) B A Salzmann (ihuxj!tucson) Alex Stein (brunix!as) ANSWERS: 1. In Every Dream Home a Heartache [ROXY MUSIC] Girl of My Dreams [BRAM TCHAIKOVSKY] Be My Girl [THE POLICE] All three songs are about inflatable dolls. [ONLY ALEX STEIN GOT THIS COMPLETELY RIGHT. INTERESTING THAT THIS TOPIC OF INFLATABLE DOLL SONGS JUST CAME UP AMIDST THE "BAD LYRICS" DISCUSSION. ONLY ONE OTHER PERSON KNEW ANY OF THESE SONGS AT ALL.] 2. Jealous Guy [JOHN LENNON] The Two of Us [THE BEATLES] The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill [THE BEATLES] John Lennon whistled on all three songs. [SCHLEICHER AND NEMEC KNEW ALL OF THE SONGS, BUT ONLY STEIN KNEW ABOUT THE WHISTLING. HE GOT ONLY PARTIAL CREDIT BECAUSE HE DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS LENNON WHISTLING.] 3. Alabama Song [BRECHT/WEILL or THE DOORS] Friday on My Mind [THE EASYBEATS] Let's Spend the Night Together [THE ROLLING STONES] David Bowie did a cover version of each of these songs. (On the B-side of a single, on "Pin-Ups", and on "Aladdin Sane".) [BILL NEMEC KNEW ALL THE SONGS, BUT ONLY STEIN (AGAIN) KNEW THAT BOWIE COVERED THEM ALL.] 4. Going for the One [YES] Are You Ready, Eddy [EMERSON, LAKE, & PALMER] I'll Betcha Thought We Couldn't Do It [GENTLE GIANT] Your Burn Me Up I'm A Cigarette [ROBERT FRIPP] Each of these songs represents a progressive rock group/artist trying to show the world that they can play out and out rock n' roll. [NOBODY GOT THIS ONE. STEPHEN FOLTA CAME CLOSEST BY KNOWING THE ELP AND YES SONGS.] 5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps [THE BEATLES] Here Comes the Sun [THE BEATLES] Badge [CREAM] All three have a George Harrison-Eric Clapton connection. "Badge" and "Weeps" were direct collaborations between the two. Harrison is the guitarist (credited as L'Angelo Mysterioso) on Cream's Goodbye album. Clapton played guitar on "Weeps". "Here Comes the Sun" was written by Harrison in Eric Clapton's garden. (Clapton may not have been credited for "Weeps" on the white album, but he did co-write it and play guitar.) [MOST PEOPLE KNEW THAT THERE WAS SOME HARRISON-CLAPTON CONNECTION, AND I WAS LIBERAL WITH CREDIT FOR THAT. THE SONGS WERE KNOWN BY MOST.] 6. A Song for You [THE CARPENTERS / LEON RUSSELL] Superstar [THE CARPENTERS / LEON RUSSELL] This Masquerade [GEORGE BENSON / LEON RUSSELL] All three are Leon Russell songs covered by other artists. [BILL NEMEC KNEW THAT THEY WERE ALL LEON RUSSELL SONGS, BUT FAILED TO NOTE THAT THEY WERE ALL COVERED BY OTHER ARTISTS WITH SOME DEGREE OF SUCCESS. I GAVE CREDIT TO STEIN FOR CLAIMING RICE/WEBBER FOR "SUPERSTAR".] 7. Instant Karma [JOHN LENNON] The Ancient [YES] Owner of a Lonely Heart [YES] Alan White played on all three cuts. [FOLTA AND NEMEC KNEW THIS, WITH ALL OTHERS KNOWING ONLY SOME OF THE SONGS AND NOT THE COMMON FACTOR. SALZMANN CONFIRMED SOMETHING I'D ALWAYS THOUGHT WHEN HE LISTED "LONELY HEART" AS BEING DONE BY THE POLICE---IT DOES EMULATE A POLICE SOUND. OF THE OTHERS BESIDES NEMEC AND FOLTA, NO ONE KNEW "THE ANCIENT" (SIDE 3 OF TOPOGRAPHIC).] 8. Happy [THE ROLLING STONES] You Got the Silver [THE ROLLING STONES] Little T&A [THE ROLLING STONES] Keith Richard(s) sang lead vocal on each of these songs. [MOST PEOPLE GOT THIS ONE CORRECT.] 9. My Funny Valentine [RODGERS & HART] I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself [BACHARACH & DAVID] Peace, Love & Understanding [NICK LOWE] Elvis Costello did a cover version of each of these songs. [NEMEC AND STEIN KNEW THIS, THOUGH STEIN GOT THE BACHARACH/DAVID SONG WRONG. IT WAS FOUND ON THE FIRST LIVE STIFFS ALBUM.] 10. Batman theme [NEAL HEFTI] War [EDWIN STARR] Heat Wave [MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS] The Jam did cover versions of these three songs. [FOLTA GOT A POINT FOR SAYING NELSON RIDDLE FOR BATMAN THEME. NEMEC KNEW WHO DID HEAT WAVE. (ONE PERSON--YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE---LISTED LINDA RONSTADT AS THE ORIGINAL ARTIST ON THAT SONG!! I SHOULD HAVE DEDUCTED POINTS!!! :-) THOUGH STEIN DID NOT KNOW WHO DID BATMAN, HE GOT THE REST OF THE SONGS AND THE COMMON FACTOR CORRECT.] 11. My Generation [THE WHO] My Sharona [THE KNACK] You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet [BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVE] Each of these songs contain stuttering prominently in the vocals. [FOLTA, NEMEC, AND STEIN. EVERYONE KNEW AT LEAST TWO OF THE SONGS.] 12. Walking on Thin Ice [YOKO ONO] Games Without Frontiers [PETER GABRIEL] Elephant Talk [KING CRIMSON] Tony Levin played bass on all of these songs. [NO ONE GOT THE COMMON FACTOR RIGHT. TWO PEOPLE THOUGHT THAT THE COMMON FACTOR WAS ADRIAN BELEW'S PARTICIPATION. MORE LATER...] 13. Maiden Voyage [HERBIE HANCOCK] Trois Gymnopedies [ERIK SATIE] Sympathy for the Devil [THE ROLLING STONES] Each one of the above was covered by Blood, Sweat, & Tears. [NOBODY GOT THIS ONE. THOUGH 4 PEOPLE KNEW SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL, ONLY ONE (STEIN) KNEW THE SATIE PIECE. BUT NO ONE KNEW ABOUT BS&T.] 14. Police on My Back [EDDY GRANT] Police and Thieves [JUNIOR MURVIN] I Fought the Law [THE BOBBY FULLER FOUR] Each of these was covered by the Clash. (and yes, though I didn't think of it at the time, they're all about being on the lam/breaking the law/the police) [THOUGH 4 PEOPLE KNEW THAT THE CLASH WAS THE COMMON FACTOR, ONLY STEIN KNEW ALL THREE ORIGINAL ARTISTS. NEMEC AND SALZMANN KNEW THE BOBBY FULLER FOUR.] 15. Crosseyed and Painless [TALKING HEADS] DJ [DAVID BOWIE] Call Me Names [JOAN ARMATRADING] Adrian Belew played guitar on each of these cuts. [YES, *THIS* WAS THE ONE WHERE ADRIAN BELEW WAS THE COMMON FACTOR (SEE #12) AND NOBODY KNEW THIS ONE. NEMEC AND STEIN BOTH KNEW ALL THE SONGS.] THE FINAL STANDINGS: B A Salzmann 28 points Bob Schleicher 30 points Stephen Folta 33 points (out of a possible 121 points) Bill Nemec 67 points Alex Stein 82 points Congratulations to Alex, and to all who were courageous enough to participate.
