[talk.rumors] Coke, classic coke and new coke

Coke spokespeople stated at the time of the New Coke debacle that the
formula for Coke has changed *hundreds* of times since the "original,"
starting with the omission of cocaine (I understand that they still use
"spent" coca leaves, and that the disposal of the cocaine resulting from
the removal effort poses a considerable problem -- anyone have more info?),
and that there had been several formula changes in the years prior to New
Coke. Other people have pointed out that the taste of Coke varies
considerable from bottler to bottler, as anyone who has ever had Coke in
Europe or Mexico can tell you. New Coke was a formula that was aimed at
capturing a different market. When it failed so spectacularly, they
reverted to another formula that was more similar to "old" Coke, but
probably retained some of the properties of New Coke in terms of being
cheaper to make and not quite so sweet. But who knows? Who cares?
IT'S JUST A SOFT DRINK, RIGHT? I gave up on Coke when they bought Taylor
Wines, announcing their intention to control the entire beverage market.
People with such grand ambitions are not very likely to pay attention to
the integrity of a single product.

On a slightly different subject -- I recently saw one of those old-timey
Coke advertisements that they've been putting on mirrors lately, and on
it was a picture of a demure young Gibson Girl who had just had a dainty
sip of Coke and was sitting there with a spaced out, cocaine rush kind
of look on her face. On the table is a scrap of paper with the words
"Good to the Last Drop." I remember this as the old Maxwell House slogan.
[In _Never_Give_a_Sucker_an_Even_break_, W.C. Fields, falling from an
airplane, wishes for a "Maxwell parachute," because it's good to the last
drop.] Was this ever officially the Coke slogan? When did Maxwell start
using it?

I've noticed that Classic Coke now uses high fructose corn sweeteners.
As far as i remember, old Coke used sugar. The new old coke seems to
taste more of corn syrup than the old old coke.

There was an article in Science News a month or so ago describing some
rather interesting experiments using high-fructose corn sweeteners. Seems
they were feeding pigs this junk to see how good for pigs it was. They had
to call off the experiment prematurely, as all the test group developed
heart problems. Now, pigs are used in these experiments because a pig's
digestive system is remarkably close to a humans.

Anyway, has any pop manufacturer stopped using high-fructose corn sweeteners
as a result of this experiment?

At least in the late 40s, the only use I had ever heard of
"good to the last drop" was indeed the Maxwell House coffee
     commercials.

I think corn is sweet enough as it is, and I believe the use of corn
sweeteners is nothing but a diversion.

There is a new cola drink made by a company in Roch., NY, called "Jolt",
whose ads say "all the sugar and twice the caffeine". They boast that
they only use real sugar, not corn-sweeteners. I think that it is only
distributed in upstate NY so far. I don't like any colas, so I have not
tried it.

Jolt Cola is being sold here in Chicago through Walgreens (not sure
of the store, but it sure is here). Everything that they say about
it is true: a six pack of Jolt will keep you going far into the night
on whatever you may be doing. Just great for those long hack projects
where things have to get done soon.

'Jolt' has made it to Ohio now. It is on sale in Columbus, at least.
I haven't tried it yet either.

The morning DJ's on a local radio station (WLVQ) were talking up
quite a storm about it this morning(Sept. 18), mostly making jokes
about how alert and hyperactive it made them, but I never did figure
out how much of their banter was show business and what they
honestly thought about Jolt.

I heard a rumour (Canadian spelling) that Jolt is available way up here
in Canada. But then, I also heard a rumour that Coke is*it.

come on guys, get real. Everybody knows the only way to pull a
good all-nighter is to have a good strong pot of black coffee, esp.
after it has been sitting for severral hours. Gives you a real
incentive to finish so you can go home to brush your teeth

Originally Coke used sugar, but over the past 10 years or so they've phased
in fructose whenever it was cheaper (which also meant that it differed from
plant to plant). In fact when Classic was first reborn the sugar manufacturers
took out a full page NYT article lambasting Coke for not really using the
original formula. But they hadn't been using it for a while and nothing
every came of it.

I'm not sure which upsets me more; that people are so unwilling to accept
responsibility for their own actions, or that they are so eager to regulate
everyone else's.

No way. I've tried just about every coffee on the face of this earth
(including munching on the grinds at the bottom of my cappucino) and
while, yes, there is a lot of caffeine in coffee, no, it just doesn't
hit you the same way as Old Coke did. Besides, my toothbrush is
sitting next to my coffee cup anyway.

Gotta try some Jolt next weekend. Where around RPI can you buy the
stuff?

I saw 2 liter bottles of Jolt in my local supermarket last week. Was in a
hurry, and didn't buy it, tho. Besides, living alone, what am I going to
do with a 2 liter bottle of caffeine??

Not a rumour, I had my first can yesterday, and Not only is it all they say,
but it doesn't even taste as bad as most Colas (must be all that sugar).
