[mod.psi] Posting requirements...

dobro@ulowell.UUCP (Gryphon) (07/25/86)

Requirements for submission to mod.psi:

1) Pertaining to the topics covered
This is pretty flexible. Almost any (tasteful) topic
in the subjects of the supernatural, paranormal,
magic, psionics, psychic research, et al. will
be considered. (see rule number 8)

2) No flames
This is not so flexible. One of the greatest problems that
this topic has seen on all the other net.whatevers is
the 'is too - is not' argument. The group is here to discuss
this field as it exists. Asking what someone meant is fine
(see next point), but saying that their opinion is invalid
will not be allowed. An opinion is an opinion, neither
right nor wrong. That isn't to say debates between
opposite viewpoints won't be allowed (it'll be encouraged).

3) Try and avoid misunderstandings (not always easy, but try)
If someone misinterprets what you said, either
simply by misunderstanding (see next point) or by
taking a quote out of context, do not yell at them
about it (see previous point). Restate your position
again using different phrasing. Granted, the tangent
created might be interesting enough to start a whole
new discussion, but if the original discussion was worth
	posting, it is worth clarifying.

4) Use existing definitions or define your terms
A set of definitions to go by is being be compiled and
will be continually updated. Use these definitions.
If you wish (or need) to use other terms, define them!
This way everyone will know what you mean when you
use a certain word or term.

5) Always referance posting you are replying to or commenting on
When following up to an article, if you do not include
the quotes you are commenting on, summarize!
People do not always remember what they wrote.

6) There is no rule number 6

7) Be careful about quoting from outside sources
There are currently some problems in the net.world caused
by people posting copywrited material. If you need to
refer to a copywrited work, tell people how to get it,
summarize, quote exerpts (small, and only if necessary),
	but be careful.

8) Again, be polite and tactful
This little (but oft forgotten) point is very helpful
in creating a pleasent atmosphere for conversation.
Basically, mind your manners and everyone else will too.
Violating this, or rule number 2, are the major two reasons
	for articles being not accepted.

9) One last lecture: try and listen to what other people are saying
Before you disagree with someone, look at what they are
saying. Ask questions, if you don't understand something.
Much more can be gotten done if both sides listen
	to what each is saying.
