Book Review by W. Ritchie Benedict

Astral Travel by Gavin and Yvonne Frost
Published by Samuel Weiser, Inc.

"Although I read a considerable amount
about various areas of the paranormal and
have had some psychic experiences my-
self, there is one facet about which I re-
main ambivalent. I have never personally
experienced an O.O.B.E. (out-of-body ex-
perience) or astral projection. I believe
there could be a genuine phenomenon
where one perceives oneself apart from the
physical body. However, the closest I've
come was a person I talked to who said he
made the mistake of drinking while on
medication once and found himself perfect-
ly conscious up on the ceiling.

One of the best features of this new book
is that it speaks to the reader in direct
terms, steering away from muddy philo-
sophical side trips or arcane terminology.

The authors deal with dreams and the
ability to remember them, the most con-
ducive physical conditions to astral travel
(i.e. no heavy meals, proper regulation of
light and temperature), avoiding fear, astral
sex(!), the role of meditation, psychic pro-
tection, time factors, healing while in this
state and inhabitants of the different planes
of reality you might run into while "out".

I wonder if the authors are aware of some
of the new theories in mathematics and
physics that parallel their descriptions of
some of these planes. Although defini-
tions vary, their descriptions remind me of
the higher orders of reality detailed by
mathematician Rudy Rucker in "Infinity
and the Mind" as well as the "Hilbert
Space" in quantum physics where activity
takes place somewhere beyond the normal
confines of space-time.

There are two concluding appendices deal-
ing with a questionaire after you have ex-
perienced astral travel and a survey of
people who claim to have done it on a reg-
ular basis (1,250). There is also a biblio-
graphy of the books the authors used in
research.

Whatever your feelings about the possi-
bility of astral travel, this book is very
interesting and one of the more useful
guides. I stial remain ambivalent, but if
ever I do experience conscious astral travel
(short of being dead) this is the book I
would turn to in order to understand what
is happening."
