			     CALL for PAPERS - APL87
			      ``APL in Transition''
				 May 11-14, 1987
				  Dallas, Texas

Five years ago, the primary operating environment of an APL
system was a large, timeshared mainframe computer. The primary
operating environment for APL has now become the personal com-
puter. More importantly, other languages and operating environ-
ments have begun to offer facilities that until recently were the
sole province of APL. Features such as array handling and
interactive debugging facilities are being found in both inter-
pretive and compiled languages. This new competition is now
causing APL to improve its own environments. The APL of five
years ago, now an international standard, has been greatly
extended in general directions, in both its environment and its
notation. This conference will focus on this maturing process
	and will contemplate possible futures.

	APL87 will be held in Dallas, Texas, from 1987 05 11 to 1987 05 15.
There will be three main themes:

APL and its Environment: Papers on the interaction of APL
and its host operation systems, other languages and
packages. Also, papers on the use of APL in distributed
processing or multiple CPU (or mainframe-PC) applications,
and the use of APL with ``non-APL'' file systems.

APL as an Application Development System: Papers in this
theme will address such issues as user interface, transpor-
tability, ease of development, ease of maintenance, and
	     efficiency in operation.

Future Developments on APL: Including ISO standards,
enhancements to the language, nested arrays, and maintaining
APL's technical superiority over alternate languages. Also
including papers relating to strategies for increasing the
use of APL, particularly among beginning users.

Also, several minor themes are expected to be covered:

Industry Specific Papers: Papers illustrating the use of APL
in various disciplines of interest to specific industries,
such as Actuarial Science, Operations Research, Investments,
Financial Planning, Education, Science, Engineering, Artifi-
cial Intelligence, Expert Systems, etc. If sufficient
papers are received in a given category or industry, a one
	     day "sub-conference" will be scheduled.

Graphics: Divers papers are expected in this rapidly expand-
ing field. The past year has seen many new applications for
graphics, and unusual papers are encouraged.

While these topics are only guidelines, the Program Committee
encourages and will consider papers dealing with any subject
relating to APL. The success of this conference depends on the
participation of the entire APL community.

	Important Deadlines:
1986 09 15 Informal abstracts due to Program Chairman.
These will be used for session planning only.
No decision to accept or reject will be made
			    on the basis of abstracts.

1986 11 15 Submission of paper for blind refereeing.
Four copies; or IPSA or STSC mailbox APL87.

1987 03 01 Camera ready copy for papers to be
			    included in proceedings.
