----- III WORLD CONFERENCE ON BIRDS OF PREY followed by an international festival for bird lovers Eilat, Israel, 22-27 March 1987 The World Working Group on Birds of Prey(WWGBP) of the International Council for Bird Preservation(ICBP), together with the Israel Raptor Information Center(IRIC) of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel(SPNI) and the Tel Aviv University, are organizing a world conference in Eilat. Themes include conservation and biology of rare raptors, conservation and biology of rare owls, population biology and breeding, raptors in polluted environments, research and management of raptor habitats, education and legislation aspects, and more. The festival following the conference will include competitions of raptor photography, painting and drawing, a birds-of-prey film festival, excursions throughout Israel and entertainment. Eilat is a desert resort city located on the northern edge of the red sea. It is blessed with constant sunshine, a clear turquoise sea with magnificent coral reefs and above all, its one of the best birdwatching sites in the world with an overwhelming migration of birds of prey. In spring 1985, more then 1,100,000 raptors of about thirty different species were counted in Eilat. This is due to the unique location of Israel at the meeting point of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa. In March you can watch migrating Steppe Eagles, Steppe Buzzards Black Kites, and many other raptor species. Other attractions are migrating waders, water birds, and local resident desert birds such as the Little Green Bee-Eater and Arabian Babbler.
