              Symposium on Computers and The Performing Arts


       The University of Michigan School of Music, together with
       the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, the
       University of Michigan Information and Technology Division,
       and the Computer Music Association, will be hosting the
       first Symposium on Computers and the Performing Arts in Ann
       Arbor, Michigan, April 11th - 13th.

       The focus of the symposium will be on computer music, as
       well as other areas in the arts in which computers have been
       or could be playing an important role.

       There will be a number of presentations and panel
       discussions on a wide variety of topics dealing with
       computers and the performing arts including such subjects
       as: the role of research in computer music, the integration
       of music, dance, and video with computers, user-interfaces
       and human interaction with computers, computer workstations
       for artistic use, and funding for creative technology.  Two
       concerts will be given by the University of Michigan
       Contemporary Directions Ensemble, which is celebrating its
       twentieth anniversary.  A number of video presentations,
       tape concerts, and live performances on real-time
       instruments will be offered.

       With special thanks to Bill Buxton (University of Toronto),
       there will be a showing of a video currently being prepared
       for the CHI+GI Conference which features some of the most
       recent developments in computer graphics and video.

       Registration for the symposium will begin on the morning of
       April 11, 1987 (Saturday, 9:00 a.m.), at the Horace H.
       Rackham School of Graduate Studies.  The first presentations
       will take place at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon.

       Fees for the symposium are as follows:

            General    $40.00
            Student    $20.00

       A special block of rooms is being held at the Campus Inn,
       near the University of Michigan Campus.  The rooms will be
       held in reserve until March 27, 1987.  Please make your
       arrangements before then, and be sure to inform the Campus
