In going through them, and especially after looking back at "Damiano" again, my impression is that MacAvoy gains security in her conception of Damiano and his world, and the hightened security allows her writing to flow more freely and smoothly. The beauty that she paints in "Damiano" grows greater through the next two. "Raphael" is, to my mind, the greatest of the three, a culmination. I could hardly put it down. Try them! Alastair Milne
