Really-From: hsu%uicsrd.CSRD.UIUC.EDU@a.cs.uiuc.edu (William Tsun-Yuk Hsu) Urge Overkill/Club Crack at Mabel's, 3/2/87 UO were making a video, so the show was free. Pretty small crowd, and they were DEAD. Only three people danced. See if they make a video here again. Urge Overkill gave an awesome show. The decent sound system really brought out the band's characteristic sound: churning, oozing guitar noise, subterranean bass lines, overlapping vocals, snappy rhythms. Reminds me of Mission of Burma and Swans. At the end the guitar player yelled: "Either you sucked or we did." See these guys when they come into your area. (Warning: their ep does not capture the live sound very well, but is still interesting.) Club Crack played their best gig so far. The vocalist finally toned down his Mick Jagger antics and things are starting to gel: tight drums and scrap metal percussion combo, high thin guitar lines and whooshing synth sounds. Crowd was dancing like mad, even people who don't usually dance at shows. They have a tape out but it's inferior to the live sound. Chicago people will get to see them soon, I think. And it was all free. What's this about the best things in life etc... Coming up in the next two months: Scratch Acid, Big Black (again!), Urge Overkill, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic (when's Roger Miller's 12" coming out???), Tom Cora, fIREHOSE. Is this a happenin' town or what? Bill

Really-From: think!haddock!chrisb (Chris Baxley) Reagan Youth/Outpatients, TT's 3/21: [When's this club gonna change it's logo to depict some kid urinating?] The Outpatients are three metal-core maniacs from western massivetwotits... I think I liked them better as the pre-pubescent hardcore band I recall seeing four years ago. Reagan Youth. Huh - maybe I was expecting a lot, but this wasn't a happening show. Could've been that someone wasn't turned up loud enough, or maybe some of this stuff's starting to sound dated?? (god forbid). I did like the singer's histrionics and between- song babble ("Awright, now I want all you guys to take off your combat boots and form an om circle..") I also like the way their record sleeve folds out into a poster. Maybe on a better day. Scream/Kingface, TT's 3/28: This was a HOT show. Both bands. Don't know much about em, except that they're from DC. Kingface is good melodic thrash, with strong instrumentals, strong vocals, strong everything. Singer reminds me a bit of the Bad Brains guy, but that might just be cause he's got dredlocks. Scream is more metal sounding, with the occasional shrieking vox heard in that genre. Also a real strong band. Recommended. Coming (or at least breathing hard..): Celibate Rifles Scratch Acid Membranes/Phantom Tollbooth Godfathers DI "Tonight only - amputees half off!"
