[net.sf-lovers] SF cover art

For those of you who enjoy cover art as much as the contents of
any SF book, check out Chris Foss. He is the one who appears
on some of the British prints (Asimov: Currents_of_Space,
Gods_by_themselves, Blish: Cities_in_flight to name a few..) and draws
spaceships that look like space trashcans. (to an untrained eye that is :-))
His acrylic technique is WAY SUPERIOR to many commercial artists, and
his realism with objects that do not exist (such as spaceships
that look like trashcans :-)) is almost eerie. (This is partly due to his
excellent command of 3-D design, and attention to detail..
His work is never a quick air-brush washout with trivial touch-ups..)
He was actually comissioned for ALIEN, and has produced VERY GOOD
designs for both the earth and the alien spaceships.
(But producers felt that Geiger could scare more people s**tless
with his designs :-)) He also worked on a set of scetches for DUNE, at least
six years before it was made into a movie. A book of his artwork was published
in late seventies, which contains most of his SF cover art as well as his
earlier cover art for WW2 novels. (U know, the spitfires, U-boats, dogfights
etc.) This book is a must for any SF cover-art lover. You will also find
some of his artwork in a book called SPACESHIPS (I think), which is easier
to get a hold of..
