I offer this to the discussion:

There should be no difference between providing or taking advice over a
BBS, network or other medium, than doing so in a face-to-face encounter.

Each time you take advice, you should be responsible for evaluating the
facts presented as well as the quality of the source. If a person is a
stranger, on a net or otherwise, his individual credibility may be a lot
lower than another person who you know to report stories accurately. If
the person making a recommendation presents lots of factual support, his
testimony will be more believable than one containing only opinion.

When you offer advice, perhaps you should remember more than anything,
you put your credibility on the line each time. Do so with due consideration.
