[mod.computers.masscomp] nfs on Masscomps

mike@mc0.UUCP (09/21/86)

Our local salesman has confirmed to us that EFS is being scrapped. The word
is that it will no longer be supported in RTU 3.1 (due out any time now).

Masscomp HAS DECIDED to support NFS. However, they will not be doing the port
themselves (this may be a bad decision). Lachman and Associates have been
contracted to do the kernal port, and Masscomp is promising something in about
6 to 12 months time! I believe Lachman are currently doing an NFS port for
VAXes under UNIX S.5.

In the interim, I don't know why Masscomp has decided to scrap EFS. We use
it here to share files between a smaller Masscomp and one with a large disk.
It works OK. Since Masscomp has decided to let a 3rd party do the NFS port, I
would have thought that they would continue to support EFS in the lag period.

Note that Sun has something called UNFS (User level NFS), that comes in 4.2
source and should be very easy to port to the Masscomp. It costs $3k, and the
only drawback is that it runs on top of the kernel, so is probably slow. We
plan to use UNFS for any of our machines that lack NFS (VMS VAXes, Masscomp,
etc).
