Several requests: 1) Is there an implementation of mail available for a Masscomp that will send/receive mail via the Ethernet from a non-Masscomp system? [ Sendmail will run SMTP and works just fine on a MASSCOMP. Alternatively, you can get the 4.3 UUCP and run UUCP/TCP. Both of these options should be available to you if you can get the Computer Science people to get you the 4.3bsd tape. Hopefully, Masscomp will come out with a "supported" SMTP product soon. -- sob] 2) We wish to add more terminals to our 5500 system. Is there a cheaper alternative to buying a Masscomp multiplexor? [Well, no. There is no alternative that is cheaper. Sorry. -- sob] -- Harry Edmon UUCP: uw-beaver!geops!uw-atm!harry (206) 543-0547 BITNET: 24440@UWACDC Department of Atmospheric Sciences University of Washington

Sorry. -- sob] > I don't know the Masscomp system that well, but if you have Ethernet and they are running some form of Unix; cant you just buy an intelligent terminal controler? I know we where looking at some smart terminal controlers that cost about $200-$300 per connect, I think they where from Encore. [If you are referring to so-called "milking machines", they may be cheaper per terminal if you already have ethernet, but are not if you have to add ethernet before buying the terminal servers.-- sob] Another though, we are getting a bunch of Commodore Amigas with Ethernet/NFS cards to tie to a 68020 based server. If you have not yet purchased the terminals it ends up costing about $2000/workstation. Not bad considering a good 9600 baud graphics terminal goes for about that much and there are terminal emulators for vt100 & Tex40xx available on Amigas. [TEK40XX is not supported by Masscomp per se. Creare supports them on the Masscomp. NFS is not yet supported on Masscomp. It might be reasonable to do something with X and the Amiga. -- sob] -- Rich Miner ...!wanginst!ulowell!miner Ulowell, Center for Productivity Enhancement (617) 452-5000 x2693 HAL hears the Amiga9000 series is not selling.
