[mod.computers.68k] Version 1.3, CP/M-68K

mknox@NGP.UTEXAS.EDU.UUCP (05/13/86)

Robert,

I don't have the "read.me" file handy at the moment, but I will try to
remember what I can.

C compiler: The total information I have on the new C at this time is
	a) "A new C compiler and runtime have been included" (that is
a quote, and the ONLY info, from the read.me file.
	b) The floating point is totally trashed [see note at bottom].

Has the CCP been upgraded? Not noticeably. They have cleaned up a few
things. Most of the fixup was in the utilities. A number of them did
not always crack the arguements correctly in error cases. Things like
that. Some of those utilities (ERA, REN) were built in, so there ARE
changes to CCP, but minor.

Should you upgrade? At this time, definitely NOT. The only fix (potentially)
worth the effort is the new C. And it doesn't work yet. [Now that related
note I promised] I talked with OEM support this afternoon. Actually, I
talked, she pretended to listen. She CLAIMS that no other site has
reported ANY problem with floating point. Whether I am the only one with
a bad disk, or am the only one trying to ship 1.3, or the only one bothering
to test anything, I do not know. I would much appreciate a report from
someone who got there copy from a DIFFERENT oem kit.

[Personal opinion time] CP/M-68K is a good system for small 68000 machines.
But it BADLY needs the kind of effort and community support that has gone
into CP/M-2.2. At BEST, a user supported CCP would be wonderful. At the
very least we need a home for wayward public domain stuff. I have collected
a fair number of PD utilities, some I wrote, some others sent me. Many
of them would be of interest to other sites. Can some soul with more time
than I wrangle a home (SIMTEL20???). I suspect Keith or Frank would let
our relatively small group nest there. Then the biggie. What kind of
upload format do we store them in. Source where possible, of course. But
what about binaries? S-records. UUENCODED??

Suggestions?
