[net.micro.ns32k] operating systems?

w_smith@wookie.dec.com (Willie Smith, LTN Components Eng.) (08/24/86)

I am thinking about getting a Compupro 32016 board for my (mostly
Compupro) S-100 machine, as my Z-80's are starting to run out of
steam (too many CP/M BIOS enhancements). Compupro sells a FORTH
'operating system' for the machine, but does anyone know of any
other (more real) operating systems and/or compilers that run on
the 32000 series?

RE: request for operating systems for 32016 processors--

Genix is the standard Unix op sys for the 32016. You can get that
from National Semiconductor, Santa Clara, Calif. Symmetric Computer
Systems has a version 7, 4.2 BSD for the 32k, but as far as I know,
they only sell it with their own machine.

NSC also supports and sells System V. For example the ICM-3216 board
set mentioned in net.micro.16k a few months back is sold with System V
and not Genix. They currently support and sell Release 2. They have
Release 3 up and running internally and will release it (on the ICM-3232
and ICM-3216) late this year or early next (timing will depend on
release of the ICM-3232 board set [which has been delayed by switching
from the 32032 to the 32332]).

BSD 4.2 was reported to have been ported to the same board set by the
University Computing Facility - University of Toronto. (Information was
previously posted on or about May 31 in net.micro.16k.)

As an aside this board set has got to be one of the better buys going
to get together an inexpensive Unix SysV system. The ICM-3216RD4 (with
4MB of memory, 4 serial ports, 1 parallel port, 1 SCSI port) goes for
about $3300 US or $1495 for educational institutions and qualified
consultants. Add one AT clone case and PS, one SCSI compatible hard disk,
one SCSI compatible cartridge tape, shake well and stir :).

Total cost should come in under $7000 US for a fairly powerful little box.
