Hi! Remember me? I'm the funny looking guy that wrote "top". I'm currently in the process of preparing for the release of top 2.0. This new version will have many new things, including shorter startup time and an interactive capability. It will also have a few bug fixes and support for additional machines. I am sending this request out for all you local hackers who have made modificaitons to top for one reason or another, espeically if you have adapted it to work on a specific architecture. I currently have versions of top that will work on the following 4.2-like systems: VAX, Sun (2.0 and 3.0), and Pyramid. If anyone has made changes for other machines, I would greatly appreciate it if you would MAIL me (please do not post) the changes. I'll put a collection of addresses and paths in my signature. I would really like to collect all the changes and such together so that all can benefit from them. For all you Pyramid people, this new version includes a fix for the obscure infinite-looping bug that sometimes appears with a small hash table size! I would also like to maintain compatability with 4.1 (yes, there are still some people out there who run it), but I cannot guarantee it. If there is some 4.1 site out there that would like to take on the burden of making it work on 4.1, then please let me know. Finally, this new version will use termcap, but it WILL NOT use curses. Dropping curses and "doing it all myself" has resulted in a surprising decrease in startup time and and small decrease in time overall. If anyone out there has serious objections to this approach, I am willing to talk you out of them (or at least discuss them with you). Perhaps even some netnews list would be appropriate for such a discussion.
