allbery@ncoast.UUCP (Brandon S. Allbery) (09/01/86)
This message is an update on UNaXcess status, and a query. UNaXcess 1.00.00 is in beta test on ncoast; those wishing a look at it may call (216) 781-6201, login "bbs". It's not completed yet, even though it's in beta test at this point; I have to test the new I/O system by full use, the other changes I can test myself. The current version adds a few commands, supports conference membership lists for special members-only SIGs, and has a new I/O system which correctly handles paging a' la more and word wrap; backspaces in an understandable manner even on terminals which don't backspace past column 1 correctly; and handles word wrap on message input. It also blocks out control characters. Work in progress includes a network interface (with UUCP, who needs Fidonet?) and a fully redone command interface with help files. I am also working on a full set of manuals; after all the distribution problems in net.sources, I'm going back to mod.sources. The installation manual has already been written; the others depend on the changes I'm working on now, so they haven't been started yet. Now for my query: As currently written, UNaXcess uses the crypt() function. However, Usenet is international and the crypt() function's internals can't leave the U.S. Do most foreign UNIX(R) systems have a reasonable replacement for use within a user program? If not, does someone have a reasonable alternative they can send me? I see no reason to post internationally a program which requires a function available only in the U.S., and I don't want to restrict UNaXcess to the U.S. ++Brandon -- ---------------- /--/ Brandon S.
