[net.sources.d] Public Domain Terminal Emulator for IBM PC

ronl@tessi.UUCP (Ron Lunde) (09/24/86)

Does anyone know of (or have) a good PUBLIC DOMAIN terminal emulator
for the IBM PC and compatibles?

  Ideally, the terminal emulator should:
     1) Emulate a terminal with a commonly available termcap (e.g. VT100)
     2) Provide download/upload of files or whole directories
     3) Provide a "logging" function (like 'typescript', only creating
	a file on the PC).

I'm only interested in PC --> Unix 4.2 at the moment, although more
  flexible programs would be fine.

  Thanks!

Yes, it is called Kermit. There are others, but I don't know if they
are PD.

Here's a few PD / Shareware programs available from many BBS's:

KERMIT 2.29	EXCELLENT VT102 / 100 emulation. Best Choice for a hard-wired
installation. Full kermit protocol support. User macros of a
		sort. Comes with good docs.

PROCOMM 2.4	Very good full bore communications package. Very flashy
screens with lotsa user configurable options. Dialing
directory, macros, support for most popular file xfer
protocols, including kermit. VT100 emulation also has
local printing support. Rudimentary host mode and a
script facility for autolog and unattended operation.

PC-VT 8.x	This full featured comm package has everything except host
and script functions that PROCOMM has. Somewhat "clumsy"
user interface for setup, configuration. VT100 emulation
very good and does support keypad setup for UNIX vi.

PIBTERM 3.5	This HUGE communications package has a lot to offer, all
the features listed for PROCOMM above. The VT100 emulation
isn't as "true" as the others listed above, but works for
most uses. No local printer support.
Rumored that new version due soon.

This list is by no means complete, the above represent programs that I have
had a chance to use. The KERMIT package lacks any support for dialing out thru
a modem so the user has to either hand type modem commands or use a dialer
routine independent from KERMIT.

A recent series of messages on the net seemed to favor PROCOMM as the best
all around package.
