Unfortunately the "net.lan" conversion gets confused with all the "net.lang.*" entries.

Namely, the new news groups article numbering starts back at 1, not where the old group left off. Therefore, you would still have to edit you .newsrc file to modify all the numbering. Of course, if you run rn, then I don't see this as a problem since rn will add groups to the .newsrc file for you whereever you want them to go.
