On a slightly related point, I wonder if the Microsoft spell checker
accepts any very strange words that never appear in English or any other
language known to humans? Such things are sometimes used to put a
signature on a database so that it can be proved that you stole it. All
Microsoft has to do is type one of these weird words in and notice that
'your' spell check thinks it's spelled correctly.

My copy of MacApp 1.0 arrived today, and I noticed that Apple has
included the license agreement with this version.

In order to distribute a program built with MacApp, you must pay a
blanket license fee of $100 per year and sign the license agreement.
Paying the $100 gives you the right to distribute as many independent
applications as you wish (unlike the System/Finder licenses). You do
have to tell Apple the names of the programs within 90 days of release.
You have to include Apple's MacApp copyright notice in the program and
some disclaimer language in the documentation.

I think just for fun :-) I'll call Apple Licensing and ask them about
publicly distributed free programs and see what they say.

Yah, if they have a copyrightable work, and want to see their copyright
notice on derivative works, they have the right.

However, doesn't this kind of indicate that MacApp is not the kind of
tool that is suitable for "serious" programming - more for the Sunday

I have noted a couple of times that Quill Corporation is a good source
for computer supplies like fanfold paper, labels, ribbons, etc. (they
are much too high on Mac disks, but I think they sell rather few to
date). I was surprised to find that their new Microcomputer supplies
catalog now lists Canon cartridges for the Apple Laserwriter,
#203-S-CNEP-CART-BK, priced at $99.88 through April.

If interested, you can write them at: Quill Corp, PO Box 4700,
Lincolnshire, IL 60197 and request to be placed on their mailing list.
To order, the phone # is 312-634-4800.

I was real jazzed (no pun intended) with Word 3.0 for about the first 3
days. It's starting to wear a little thin already. The copy I have
seems to be in love with the New York font--it constantly switches back
to it when I change the font style. I suppose it's something I'm doing
wrong, but I don't think I should have to study the manual for 2 weeks
to use this program. I also just recently purchased a copy of More
(finally!) and I am finding myself using More more and Word less (aren't
Mac names fun!) . MS could definitely take a few lessons from Living

I've seen the Macintosh SE and I found it very _UGLY_... I wonder if
Jerry C. Mannock (the great designer of the Apple II and the Macintosh)
is still at Apple? Looking at the SE and the Mac II the answer seems to
be NO. Maybe he is at NeXt... (has anyone the answer?) [Sometimes young
children are very beautifull; but when they've grown up, by education,
they look as common people... It's too bad the Macintosh grown up that
way!] And I wonder why they changed the Keyboard Mapping ?!? This has
nothing to do with DeskTop Bus... And why no ROM Upgrade for other
Macintosh? Is the presence of that same DeskTop Bus a valid excuse to
not upgrade? I don't think so! There is AppleTalk in the 128K ROM's and
most of people never uAppleTalk... I sometimes wonder if Mac PLUS can
_really_ be upgraded till 4 megs (power supply! I mean, I sometimes
wonder if Apple is playin' our bill...

It's kinda fun trying to wriggle past the service staff at
Letraset...grin. They obviously have little experience in dealing with
software upgrades, so getting to a technical support staffer for
questions involves a lot of repetition and explanation. At least they
are very cordial and *willing* to listen, and while you may not reach
your destination quickly, you won't be put on HOLD, either.

Whatever else may have gone down in the deal with Boston Publishing,
it does seem that Letraset is committed to support of RSG now that they
have it. RSG 3.1 is in the works, with actual availability scheduled
for May 1. While it will correct "all known" program bugs with RSG 3.0,
they are trying to add some small new features as well, requested by
users.
Details aren't far enough along to say for sure, I was told, but they
expect to handle the upgrade as they are currently doing for owners...if
your copy of RSG 3.0 is not the latest (should have Dec. 15, 1986 as the
Creation Date in Get Info) you send in your master disk for the newest
version, freebie.

In the meantime, the staff is happy to try to work around problems
you might have with RSG 3.0. The support number is 1-800-634-3463. If
you keep asking for "ReadySetGo 3.0 Technical Support", you'll get
through.

..and now to a company not so helpful or interested in users, Altsys.

I called to get information on FONTastic PLUS upgrades from FONTastic
and reported problems having Fontographer fonts download to Laserwriters
with the newest LW system files installed. I got neither.

RE: the upgrade to FONTastic PLUS, I was told there would be an upgrade,
and it would probably be $30, but they didn't really know. I was told
that they will be trying to send out information to registered users on
the upgrade in the next few weeks, but didn't know what it would be.

As to the LW problem, first I was told that since Apple had not released
the new LW files in anything but Beta-test versions, they had no
information. After some talk, they admitted that they did receive
release copies of the new System files last week but had not had time to
install them, so they couldn't say anything about problem.

I figured that as long as they were wanting to be evasive, I'd ask about
copy-perversion. It won't be on FONTastic PLUS (yeah!), but it will
remain on Fontographer (booo! hisss!). While they wouldn't come out
and admit it, I gathered the reason was the price they would have to pay
to use CP would up FONTastic PLUS ($79.95) out of the price bracket they
want it in. After some semi-heated talk about the hassles of using
Fontographer in its CP state, they admitted it would be better to have
it non-perverted, "but not yet".

I am running Filemaker Plus on a 512E, and when I first got it, I had a
few crashes, but I haven't had any lately. I *think* the crashes had
more to do with disk space problems than memory, because when I removed
the system files from the disk, the crashes seem to have disappeared. I
moved the System to another disk because my files are large, but I have
had few problems since, at least of the crash variety. Sorry I can't be
more specific.

After using FM+ for a few months, I can tell you that I would not even
bother TRYING to use it if all I had was two 400K drives. It's tight
enough with two 800K drives. On the other hand, I really like the
package, because it's extremely easy to do what I want, and as long as I
design the database right the first time (and I always do, of course
<grin>), it's trouble-free.

How about... an INIT that stores the startup contents of PRAM, and a

Subject: asynchron serial driver calls
Date: 12-MAR 16:14 Programming

I have big troubles using the asynchron I/O feature of calls to the
serial driver! Does there exist a working example which is different
from DumbTerm.Pas from TML. The problem is as follows: DumbTerm posts
one readcall in the Event loop. So I added after the asynchronus call
took place in the called routine a call to post another read. That is
somehow recursive but the only way to keep up with the input stream of
1200 baud. The problem is that I have to control the incoming data and
have to send back control chars, the display of the data itself takes
longer than receiving the data. But the amount of data to receive is
limited to 2kBytes. So I need some way to receive and check data in the
background. If all data for a display unit is present I post an
application event. The looping main program picks the event up in the
main event loop and takes care of displaying the data.

What is allowed to do in an asynchronus I/O call? I know what IM says
but perhaps someone has application experience. Any sugestions? I would
even replace the serial interupt driver if necessary.

From: BRECHER

The problem with asynchronous serial input is that your completion
routine is called with interrupts disabled, so it doesn't have time to
do very much. If the only control of the incoming data you have to do
is to send XOFF/XON for management of the input buffer, then the serial
driver can do that for you. If you have other things to do in real time
in response to each incoming character you may have to write your own
driver.

I am fortunate enough to have a loaner Mac SE with 20MB internal hard
disk to check out for a couple of days. It does seem somewhat faster
than my Plus but nothing quantifiable yet..(Ric will be doing benchmarks
later)

This sucker is a bit noisy though..I am used to the quiet of my FX-20
humming under my desk but this guy is alot louder (ie. louder than a
HD-20SC if that gives you any reference points.)

The new newboard (Apple Keyboard) is nice but why the avante-garde
lettering of the letters on the keys? I feel like i have to sit
sideways or tilt my head to see the letters right.

My biggest concern thusfar is that I CANNOT connect my GCC FX-20 to the
SE. Anyone got any ideas on this one. The SCSI disk is addr. 0 and my
FX-20 is 5. If the FX-20 is powered on and connected to the SCSI port on
the SE I get the old sad, frowning Mac with '00000001' and '0000000F'
underneath. If the FX is not turned on, there is no problem. If I turn
on the FX after I've powered up the SE I cannot access it. The Apple
HD-20SC 'manager' application sees the drive at address 5 and can 'test'
it okay but nothing beyond that. If I try to launch the FX manager
application it says ...'searching for Hyperdrives' then crashes (la
bomba) (Sorry, can't remember the ID...I think 01).

Has anyone got any documentation that describes this problem. I assume
that it is GCC's problem now unless I am doing something fundamentally
wrong.

Benchmarks are coming (initially, it looks 10-20% faster on our standard
benchmarks, just as claimed); but first, the SCSI compatibility
problems.

Along with the HyperDrive FX/20, the Mac SE also chokes and won't boot
with the DataFrame XP40 (Init 2.1), and the Rodime 45 Plus (external).
The symptoms are the same as Jon described above, and I suspect they may
be due to controller incompatibilities. This is an SE with the internal
SCSI drive. An SE with 2 800K floppies may or may not have the same
problem.

Another problem with this set-up is disks, like the AST 4000 base unit,
and the Sunol SCSI 245, which are set to SCSI ID 0 and can't be changed
easily. They hang on boot, with the access light on, and you can't even
get the light to go out many times.

The LoDOWN disk (LD155) won't boot at all. It won't mount, although the
SCSI address is set to other than 0. (So were the Rodime and XP40).

Disks which *do* work are as follows:

Peripheral Land PL172 (very fast) CMS S240 (also fast) Northern Telecom
S261 (ditto) Mirror 172x Peak 20 Magic 20 (you must find the location
and add jumpers inside) Jasmine Direct Drive 80 (no problem, also
speedy)

Another complaint on Word. When I tried to convert a document written
in columns from the old Word -- guess what? Kaflooy! Most of the
formatting was lost, headers were lost in many cases, and plain text
came up underlined when only headers were underline d originally! Lots
of fun trying to fix that one. I finally gave up, called MS and was told
there was probably something wrong with my convert program (which, by
the way, they do *not* tell you how to do in the manual!) They told me
to send in an zerox of my document, a disk with the document as it now
appears and they would fix it. All I can say, is Thank God, I finished
it before changing to the update --formatting in col. is icky to say the
least. Formatting with Word is *still* painful.

Does anyone know if the Mac II video card/monitor combination support
csCode 11 in the video device driver? This call allows a program to set
things like contrast and brightness which are normally located on knobs
and dials of convention monitors. Seems like a pretty nifty feature to
me...

In a similar vein, anyone know if these monitors power down
automatically along with the Mac? Seems to me if the ShutDown command
actually shuts the machine off, then it only makes sense to power down
the monitor at the same time.

Just curious and impatient...

Tell Eric Mazur that he can get multiple LaserWriter copies printed
quickly by holding down the shift key, while selecting the PRINT
command with the mouse. The The LaserWronger's own dialog box will
appear. Enter the number of copies desired, and click OK. Then select
Print (without the shift key) and request 1 copy. The proper number of
copies will then print, with all copies of each page together. After
this select Print with the shift key again and set the number of copies
to 1.

Jeff... can this 'quirk' in the game be reported to:

jayr@well.UUCP (Jay Roth)

who I guess wrote it...

When the game runs out of cards, it doesn't seem to realize it and just
sits there unless the player can win. So I doesn't officially 'hang'
but can't do anything from there except a total restart of the game.

thanks.

What would you think of a disk that bombs under System 3.2, apparently
due to the use of caching in the disk driver and consequent collisions
with Apple's cache; which requires three iterations of a Mount utility
to come online at all, which can't be booted directly, and which doesn't
work at all with the Mac SE? It's called the LoDOWN LD-155.

OR,

How about removing the Control Panel from the System file running on the
Mac?

There might be some little wires or PC traces you could cut to
write-protect Parameter Ram, but then again there are a lot of other
things one can cut with a razor blade, aren't there?
