I found the following messages in our mail box. Some of these helped me
track down a bug in our sendmail configuration file, but I'm not sure what
went wrong with some of the other messages. Anyway, these are all intended
for the mailing list and in case you have not received these yet, here they
are:

If you will give me your mail address I will send you a sheet
describing the coldstart mod. However, it will not do you much good unless
you have an 8K OMNIMON in the system to take control after resetting the
CPU. Also, I have not had much luck in preserving the contents of the
ramdisk when the CPU locks up. I think the RAM must lose the refresh
when the CPU locks up.

I want to add an interface for a Hayes compt modem.
And I was told by someone there are a lot of serial interface availiable
, but I have no idea which will suit my requirement.
There are Atari 850, P:R CONNECTION (100 % 850 compt?), U-CALL and
R-VERTER.
Have you used any of the above?
Which one is better?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Re: Need info: Hardware mod for Sys-Reset

At one time, I was thinking about adding a hardware reset to the 400/800 also.,
and for the same reason. Seems to me that one of the 6502 cpu chip pins is a
reset pin, and all you'd have to do is ground that pin momentarily to reset
everything. Don't know if the op sys would go and clear memory as a result of
this though.

FYI - If the 8K OMNIMON is anything like OMNIMONXL, and you are as serious
about your 800 as buying a 512K upgrade suggests, you certainly shouldn't
waste any time in ordering it. (Though not on the ARPANET, of course!)

David's phone number, if you want information on OMNIMON, is (214) 235-2146
and his address is:

NOTE: I have no financial interest in CDY Consulting; I am just a satisfied
customer, having bought OMNIMONXL, the 80-column display upgrade OMNIVIEW,
and the 256KXL 256-K ram upgrade for my 800XL.

David,
Congrats on getting kermit working. Did you get my previous message
about the problem tranfering files w/ names exactly 8-chars long? Maybe
you can find the time to correct it, as I can't. (On the other hand
it could be a problem w/ the Kermit we are running on the VAXen around
here....) The length of the extension apparently does not matter, but
if the filename is 8-chars long it just hangs.....

I would like to report that I have successfully got the Jack Palevich's
Kermit written in ACTION! running with my ATR8000 and MYDOS. What a nice
program! I am so pleased with it that I am determined to eventually add
a VT100 emulator to it when I get the time. Of course I will share it with
the net also.

I have fixed 1 bug that anybody who is using anything other than ATARI or OSS
DOS should be aware of. It has to do with the way the end of directory is
detected when it is being read through CIO. Normally the last record is
something like "xxx FREE SECTORS". However, the exact format varies with
different DOS's and you can't depend on it always being 17 bytes long
(including $9B at end). Jack however uses this fact to detect the end of
directory. He also assumes that the filespecs are that long. This is just
not the case all the time. The only reliable way I have found to read the
directory of all DOS's is to not assume anything about the length of the
filespec (use the $9B to detect the end of one) and detect the last record
by the fact that it does not start with a '*' or ' '. Thus, the fix to
make the SEND option work is as follows:

In KIO.ACT change the line
     IF DSPEC(0) <> 17 THEN RETURN(0) FI
to
     IF DSPEC(1) > 43 THEN RETURN(0) FI

If somebody with another DOS could try this out to make sure it works I would
appreciate it if you would let me know. If it appears to work correctly for
all DOS's then maybe we should consider putting it in the archives in place
of the current KIO.ACT. Which brings up another point. How does one add
things to the archives? When I soup up this Kermit with the VT100 emulator
I am definately going to want to put it there.
