I just learned of the existence of a modified version of the Avatex 1200-baud modem that includes a built-in Atari XL/XE (or plain ole 400/800) interface. For a 1200 baud, Bell 212 and Hayes 1200 compatible modem with interface, the price is unquestionably right, namely somewhere well under $200. In fact, the dealer price is a lot closer to $100, especially with a special promotion that is just about to end. But I will leave price discussions with that deliberately vague sketch and merely mention the source as Nite Lite Systems, Billerica, MA. They can be reached by phone at (617) 663-4463. Ask for Paul Swanson, the proprietor. He also runs a Bulletin Board System (BBS) at (617) 663-4421. Supposedly, Nite Lite Systems is a name that should be familiar to operators of BBS systems, as there are some 150 NLS BBSes nationwide. NLS is also a 520ST dealer and purveyor of 1Meg upgrade services as well as repair services on all Atari products. NLS also sells the Avatex modem with just RS-232 C interface, and I believe the price is $99.95, but talk to Paul Swanson for an official quote. NOTE: As I understand it, there is a special promotional price on the modified Avatex modem which will be good for only about another week, so anybody who is interested should NOT LET GRASS GROW UNDER YOUR FEET -- get in touch ASAP if you want the promotional price. Good luck!!! I am running one of the plain Avatex 1200 baud units tonight for the first time and it looks like an incredible bargain at under a hundred bucks! -John Sangster - jhs@mitre-bedford.arpa.usual disclaimer
