I am using an Avatek modem on my DEC 2020 for the KLINIK line (the remote dial-in to the console; with the KLINIK password you can do everything remotely that you can do at the console). It seems to work, although it sends some burst of characters when initially connected. I have no idea how it works for dial-out. My other modems are DEC DF112's and my dial-out software talks that protocol, not Hayes. The Avatek is a subset of Hayes protocol that reputedly works on all the Atari software. It has been reputed that these modems should be considered disposable; that is, if it works beyond the warranty period be grateful, and when it gives up the ghost you'd buy a new modem instead of repairing it. -------

The modem I bought was by Avatex, not Avantek. It sells for under $100. I paid $80, and others can possibly get that price or better in a group purchase. Call Rick Pommet at Nelson Communications, (617) 738-6000 to strike up a deal. (He is a died-in-the-wool Atari freak, so he is sympathetic rather than greedy!) -John S, jhs@mitre-bedford.arpa.usual.disclaimer
