[net.micro.atari8] Atari user magazines

Howard_Chu@UMich-MTS.MAILNET (06/22/86)

Hello... I've had an 800XL for a few months now, and I'm really
getting discouraged in my attempts to find documentation and
all around News type stuff. The local bookstores etc. only seem
to carry Compute and Antic, and only occasionally. I'll probably
subscribe to one or the other, or both, but I was wondering about
any other magazines that were around. Also, if anyone has a supply
of the Compute's Atari guides, I'd be interested in finding them
as well. I saw an add in an issue from last year showing them
on "inventory reduction sale" and I don't think they're available
locally any more.

So, it all boils down to a simple request for recommendations...
Please post your favorite sources of Atari info & programs,
as well as maybe a brief comment on why it's good. I generally
prefer a magazine well stocked with program listings & technical
articles, as well as a fair amount of ads... Thanks in advance.

The best Atari Magazine is ANALOG. They give honest reviews, and
good technical descriptions. In other words they don't treat thier
readers as children. Its not fluff like many of the other computer
specific magazines are like Amigaworld and Macworld and doesn't read
like a sales brochure. I don't have the subscription address, but I
believe the price is 25.00 per year.

Re: Howard Chu's request for information.

I have found Mapping the Atari, XL/XE 1985 edition, to be an excellent
reference source, as is the Atari XL/XE Users' Guide by Webber Systems.
For Assembly-language programming, the BYTE book by Mark Chasin,
Assembly-Language Programming for the Atari Computers is excellent.

For overall hardware/software understanding of the 800 series, De Re Atari is
hard to beat.

As for magazines, Analog Computing is perhaps the best one for the Atari 8-bi
machines, in my opinion.

I hope this is some help.
