I recently acquired two cassette-based copies of the Epyx "Temple of Apshai" FRP game for $0.99 each (!) at an "Atari liquidation sale" where Video Concepts was dumping their computer games. (I was so pleased with the price, I ran to Sears and got a 1010 recorder for $15!) I wrote a program to read the very marginal cassette files, several times if necessary, and output a clean copy onto a decent Type I ferric cassette (raising the output level ~12 dB in the process! WHY do people pay $$$ for "computer" cassettes???), but the prospect of dragging this thing in off tape each time I want to play raised some questions in my mind. Running the game seems to involve Basic. I haven't looked very closely at what happens, but I suppose that, at least theoretically, the thing could be modified to run off a floppy. At this point, I don't even know if the game is built to save/restore characters, or preserve a game somewhere in the middle. Does anyone have any experience with this? I also picked up an "upgrade", more advanced data files, I suppose, but these are on floppy. Might they be compatible? -- -Charles Green at C3 Inc. {styx!seismo,cvl,dolqci}!decuac!c3pe!charles "Batches?! We don' need no compressed batches!"
