[net.micro.atari8] H/W Help needed for 600XL

I am looking for electrical schematics and technical information on
the Atari 600XL machine. I have checked SAMS Compufacts and they DON'T
publish a package for the 600XL. The nearest thing they have is for
the 800XL machine.

How close are the 800XL and 600XL machine? I believe that the firmware
in the two machines is very close. The hardware seems very close except
for the memory (64K vs 16K) and the video monitor connections ....
How good an assumption is this???

Has anyone tried to use the SAMS 800XL info to work on a 600XL unit?

So does anyone know of another source for this type of information?

Specifically, I want info on how to interface to the machine...

1) Some analog type sensors (primarily temperature)... Can this be
done through the joy-stick ports, with the A to D conversion do
   internal to the 600XL ?

2) Misc digital signals (both input and output) to be connected to
one of the user busses, (I don't know which one would be best).

Thanks for any info or ideas ....

I believe the hardware is about the same. I have done the 256K Byte Mag.
upgrade to my 600XL and needed no changes to the memory management pal.
There is also in the upper left hand corner of the board, around the power
switch, an area that has holes for devices that hasn't been populated.
The circuitry thats been left off provides composit video and an audio signal.
I have added this circuitry to my 600XL and have it connected to a color
monitor.

You can use A to D conversion in the joy stick ports for the appilcation you
describe here. They are 8 bit A to D one in each joy stick. I don't know how
fast they are, but I do know that the Atari light pen uses one of them.

You could use the digital signals in the two joy-stick ports. These signals
go through a PIA and can individually be programed as an input or an output.
