What are some common problems people have had with the original Avatex 1200s? I just got one recently, and it seems to fail the manual digital loopback test about 2/3s of the time. This is really odd, because once I actually get through to the thing properly, the line is error free. I'll assume from this that there's nothing wrong with my cabling. Anyone else experience something similar? What'd you do about it? -- Howard Chu hyc@umix.cc.umich.edu ihnp4!umich!umix!hyc

I've used three different Avatex 1200's and they all worked fine. They also (surprisingly) have excellent noise immunity - better than the other modems I've tried, including the Anchor Automation Express, Multitech 1200, and Prentice Popcom X-100. At our location about a mile from a 5KW AM broadcast station, we can hear the radio on the phone, but I got no noise at all with the Avatex's. The others all showed sporadic {'s. - Michel
