[net.micro.atari8] A new user asks some questions.

Keywords: help!

Hello, everyone. I am a new 8-bit Atari user (130 XE),and after reading
this newsgroup for a few weeks, I gathered up the courage to ask a few
questions. This is my first posting to the net, so please forgive if I ask
about thingswhich were covered in previous articles, or otherwise tread on
 toes; it's unintentional.
 1) What is the OMNIVIEW O/S? Will it work on an XE as opposed to an XL, and
if so,where can I buy this modification?
 2) Can one get compilers/interpreters for languages other than BASIC for
an 8-bitter? What packages do people like the best? Are there ones a neo-
    phyte should steer clear of?
 3) Will SpartaDOS support the full memory of the 130XE? For that matter,
does any DOS utilize the full RAM of the 130? And what's the difference
between the unmodified 1050 drive and the thing the SpartaDOS people sell?
 4) Is the P:R Connection as good an interface (if you own one) as the 850?
Is an interface necessary, or is it possible to just add an RS-232 port?
 5) Which publications are the most accurate/useful/helpful, esp. for new
users? Is there a good macro assembler package? Are any of the books on
the market close to being worth the price?
Such a lot of questions.(*sigh*)I thank everyone for their patience. If you
will answer via e-mail, I will summarize opinions for the group.
Oh, by the way can I be added to the Atari mailing list?

There are a few compilers available for the 8 bit. Some of the
betters ones are: Action!, MAC/65, and Kyan Pascal.

Yes, Sparta DOS does use the extra memory in the 130xe. The "thing"
ICD sells for the 1050 allows the 1050 to become a "true" double
density drive, and speeds up the drive. Well worth it!

The PR connection is just as good as the 850, from what I hear. I
have an 850. I don't know of anybody who just sells a RS232 port for
the Atari.

There are a few good magazines for the Atari. Some of them are:
ANALOG
ANTIC
Atari Explorer.
