Yesterday, I typed in the mini-RAMdisk program that Bill Wilkinson published in COMPUTE! recently (Oct. 86), and by golly it actually works. For those who missed it, this runs on an 800XL WITHOUT ANY UPGRADE, and it uses the normally idle RAM under the O/S (48K to 65K) as the RAMdisk!!!! It holds 105 sectors, which is enough to do some useful things like copying small files from one disk to another, or storing input files for programs which require rapid I/O response. (A Morse Code program I wrote recently is a good example!) After trying out this RAMdisk, I am convinced that EVERY 800XL owner should CERTAINLY have it!!! But be warned, once you have seen how quick a RAMdisk is, you will be a likely candidate to buy one of the memory upgrades that let you run a REAL (full-sized) RAMdisk! -John Sangster jhs@MITRE-Bedford.arpa
