Hot off the presses! Last night I just got CDY's OmniCom VT100 emulator up and running, and it is a delight to use. I have used VT10SQ, which has been around awhile as a Public Domain VT100 emulator, and while it is useable, CDY's new implementation runs circles around it in convenience. Specifically, OmniCom currently supports 1. kermit file transfers (supported on many hosts) 2. xmodem file transfers (supported on many BBS and some large hosts too) 3. single-keystroke emulation of the VT100 keypad!!! The SELECT key is used to change the keyboard over to keypad mode, so you can type repeated cursor moves, etc., as single keystrokes rather than ESC-this and ESC-that as required with VT10SQ. According to David Young, proprietor of CDY Consulting, the final version of OmniCom will also support capture of incoming data to a file and transmission from a file, which will permit transfers to and from most other systems even if they don't support kermit or xmodem. OmniCom is extremely user friendly with regard to allowing you to re-program any key to send either a single hex character or a macro. It leads you through the process so you quite literally don't need a manual to use it; all you have to remember is that the OPTION key calls up the options menu, and the prompts do the rest. You can even re-program the KEYPAD for special applications! Having used CDY's OmniWriter word processor for a number of months, I am not surprised to find OmniCom such a nice product, but nevertheless I am very pleased to FINALLY have a VT100 emulator for my XL which makes it every bit as convenient to use as my "real" vt100 at work, a

I appreciate the personality file that can be stored so the program boots up in the form you want (baud rate, screen color, special key definitions). The only problem I know of right now is the BREAK operation the comes with the program. I do most of my work on a UNIX based VAX machine. I had that BREAK problem with an earlier version, but the version I have now (October 1, 1986) works fine. (Also using a vax running Unix...) Maybe you have the older version? -- Howard Chu hyc@umix.cc.umich.edu ihnp4!umich!umix!hyc
