TITLE: First Look at Atari's IBM Box
microbytes/items #113 Thu Mar 13 14:44:36 1986

At the opening of the Hannover Fair in West Germany, Atari
of Sunnyvale, CA, exhibited its IBM PC-compatibility box for
the 520ST and 1040ST computers. While the product will not
be ready for shipping until September at the earliest, its
display to the public is thought to indicate that Atari is
willing to go on record as backing this particular design.
The box has its own 8088 built-in with a socket for the
8087. It also has 512K bytes of RAM. Connection to the Atari
computer is via the DMA port.
With actual product introduction at least six to seven
months away, Atari representatives would not discuss pricing
beyond a statement that reaffirmed the company's history of
producing "in high volume at low cost."
The announcement in Hannover reportedly does not signal
an intention by the firm to earmark initial-release products
for the European market in preference to North America.
Company officials noted that this was simply the first
public forum for which the unit was functional enough to be
shown. Initially, Atari had planned to show the
compatibility box last week in London but had to change its
plans and move to Hannover when the unit proved not quite
ready.
